Families for Families Campaign
The needs of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and the ability of state and federal programs to meet those needs are in stark contrast. Individuals with IDD have the right to grow and thrive in the communities of their choosing, but the infrastructure, resources and vision necessary to promote those rights are too often lacking. Families are uniquely positioned to effectively communicate the message that: this lack of resources and infrastructure is unacceptable and to impact the decisions of policy makers. The Arc Connecticut has always believed that with supports that reflect goals and personal aspirations, individuals with IDD can grow and thrive in the community of their choosing.
The Arc Connecticut Families for Families groups were formed in 2012 to give families a voice within the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) as well as at the Capitol – family advocacy. The vision for The Arc Connecticut Family for Families also includes developing local community-based groups for families to share information, connect with others on statewide issues, work collectively on local issues, meet with state lawmakers and Connecticut’s federal delegation. Families for Families members help each other with advocacy, benefits, resources, and support. Families for Families members have formed lasting friendships.
The Arc Connecticut’s Families for Families has mobilized thousands of families and individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) around preventing harmful changes, as well as promoting helpful changes, to the DDS private system of support by advocating for systemic change, new policies and legislation.
